Managing Foot Arthritis

Arthritis can affect the joints in the ankles, feet, and toes, leading to symptoms such as pain, swelling, and stiffness. It can also cause changes in the shape of the feet, making it challenging to find appropriate footwear. Some ways to manage foot arthritis include exercise to maintain joint mobility, weight management if necessary to help reduce pressure on the feet, and properly fitted and supportive footwear to protect the feet. There are various medical treatments available to manage arthritis-related foot pain and stiffness. These may include medications, heat and cold therapy, topical creams, and dietary supplements. If you have discomfort from foot arthritis, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an examination and treatment options to help you get back to comfortable functioning as soon as possible.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Paul Drucker from NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a term that is commonly used to describe joint pain.  The condition itself can occur to anyone of any age, race, or gender, and there are over 100 types of it.  Nevertheless, arthritis is more commonly found in women compared to men, and it is also more prevalent in those who are overweight. The causes of arthritis vary depending on which type of arthritis you have. Osteoarthritis for example, is often caused by injury, while rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a misdirected immune system.

Symptoms

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased Range of Motion

Arthritic symptoms range in severity, and they may come and go. Some symptoms stay the same for several years but could potentially get worse with time. Severe cases of arthritis can prevent its sufferers from performing daily activities and make walking difficult.

Risk Factors

  • Occupation – Occupations requiring repetitive knee movements have been linked to osteoarthritis
  • Obesity – Excess weight can contribute to osteoarthritis development
  • Infection – Microbial agents can infect the joints and trigger arthritis
  • Joint Injuries – Damage to joints may lead to osteoarthritis
  • Age – Risk increases with age
  • Gender –Most types are more common in women
  • Genetics – Arthritis can be hereditary

If you suspect your arthritis is affecting your feet, it is crucial that you see a podiatrist immediately. Your doctor will be able to address your specific case and help you decide which treatment method is best for you.

Fascinating Facts About Children’s Feet

As children gleefully skip and run, their feet become the unsung heroes of their adventures. A child’s foot is not fully developed at birth, and will gradually mature as the growing process occurs. Flat feet, often seen in toddlers, emerge as a result of developing arches. The right shoes for tiny feet are paramount, supporting their natural formation. Interestingly, children have more sweat glands per square inch on their feet as compared to adults, making it understandable to crawl or walk without socks. When children’s feet are observed, their evolving balance and coordination skills can be noticed. So, next time you witness a hop, a skip, or a jump, remember, those feet are crafting a tale of growth, exploration, and endless childhood delight. If you would like additional knowledge about children’s feet, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Paul Drucker of NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, is a condition that affects the blood vessels in the extremities. It is caused by a buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, which narrows the blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the lower limbs and feet. Common symptoms of peripheral artery disease include hair loss on the feet and legs, intermittent pain in the muscles when walking, and cold sensations in the feet or lower legs. Numbness, slow toenail growth, and non healing sores or ulcers on the legs and feet can also occur. In some cases, finding a pulse in the leg or foot becomes difficult. The primary cause of PAD is atherosclerosis, or clogging of the arteries. Risk factors that play a role can include diabetes, smoking, obesity, and high blood pressure. Engaging in physical activity may help to improve symptoms and reduce the risk of developing PAD. Peripheral artery disease is a significant risk factor for heart attacks and strokes, and an early diagnosis is crucial in preventing severe consequences. If you suspect you may have PAD that has begun to affect your lower legs and feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and treatment plan.

Peripheral artery disease can pose a serious risk to your health. It can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack. If you have symptoms of peripheral artery disease, consult with Dr. Paul Drucker from NYC Foot Care, PC. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is when arteries are constricted due to plaque (fatty deposits) build-up. This results in less blood flow to the legs and other extremities. The main cause of PAD is atherosclerosis, in which plaque builds up in the arteries.

Symptoms

Symptoms of PAD include:

  • Claudication (leg pain from walking)
  • Numbness in legs
  • Decrease in growth of leg hair and toenails
  • Paleness of the skin
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Sores and wounds on legs and feet that won’t heal
  • Coldness in one leg

It is important to note that a majority of individuals never show any symptoms of PAD.

Diagnosis

While PAD occurs in the legs and arteries, Podiatrists can diagnose PAD. Podiatrists utilize a test called an ankle-brachial index (ABI). An ABI test compares blood pressure in your arm to you ankle to see if any abnormality occurs. Ultrasound and imaging devices may also be used.

Treatment

Fortunately, lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, managing cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and quitting smoking, can all treat PAD. Medications that prevent clots from occurring can be prescribed. Finally, in some cases, surgery may be recommended.

Types of Foot Arch Pain

The arches of the feet work to transfer the weight from the heels to the toes when you walk. When the tendons and ligaments of the foot, which make up the arch, are inflamed they can cause pain and discomfort. The main type of arch pain comes from plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that connects the toes to the heels, and it can become inflamed and painful. Another cause of arch pain is a bone fracture or sprained ligament. Arthritis and flat feet also may result in arch pain. The type and cause of the arch pain will dictate how to handle it. Grade 1 arch pain happens during activity. Grade 2 occurs before and after the activity but doesn’t impede the activity itself. Grade 3 arch pain occurs before, during, and after activity, and it also affects performance. Finally, with Grade 4 arch pain, activity is difficult, and pain is constant. For more information on how to deal with foot arch pain, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.
